Morosouk , The Moroccan SOUK , is a marketplace designed to introduce Moroccan Crafts to the world , Each of our “ Maalems “ ( which stands for Craftspeople ) produce their Handmade Crafts entirely in Morocco .

History of the ancestral know-how

The first known inhabitants of Morocco, the Amazigh were the precursors in the field of craftsmanship especially in the work of wool (carpets), iron and silver (jewelry), various utensils and clay (pottery) . After Islamization and the arrival of the Arabs, other forms of craftsmanship developed: working with copper (various utensils, tables), wood, sorrel, esparto and clay (pottery ). This craft covers practically all of Morocco and each region has its own specialties, drawn from the raw materials which are abundant here . But the cities best known for their crafts are Fez (leather, copper, silver, gold, fabrics), Marrakech (leather, copper, carpets), Essaouira (wood, carpets, silver) and Rabat-Sale (pottery). The regions of Agadir and Tafilalet also have valuable crafts. In addition, it is in the only city of Meknes that one can meet craftsmen who practice damascening (the art of engraving on steel which makes it possible to make vases, jewelry, etc.)

What is used to make moroccan leather ?

Moroccan leather can be made from the skins of camels, cows, sheep or goats. The hides are first cleaned and softened using a pretty sickening-sounding mixture of quicklime, salt, water, and – yes – cow urine and pigeon shit. Apparently the ammonia in the animal effluent helps soften the skins and prepare them to absorb the dye. After curing and softening comes colouring. Only natural dyes are used, including indigo for blue, saffron for yellow, poppy flower for red and henna for orange. The dyes are poured into the stone pits and then workers get in with the dyes and massage the skins with their feet to make sure the colour is spread evenly.

The entire Moroccan leather production process involves no machinery, only manual labour, using skills and techniques virtually identical to those employed in medieval times .

About Rugmad

How our rugs are made ?

By Getting a Rug from us, you are sure to buy the best quality of Morrocan rug.

The artisanal Berber Rug , in Morocco, highlights this ancestral know-how of weaving whose techniques are passed down from generation to generation. It should also be noted that without sheep, there would be no wool, which is why the importance of breeders who contribute greatly to this art, is to be saluted. In the mountainous areas, in the plains and valleys of the Moroccan High and Middle Atlas, weaving is the pride of all. A real artisanal Berber carpet is presented as a painting canvas. Whatever its style, one thing is certain, many hours of work are required to weave and / or tie the wool of the work. Likewise, it takes a lot of patience and perseverance to get a beautiful Berber carpet.

Our Rugs are not only a decorative piece to embellish your rooms. It is a Craft that tell the story of the ancient Berber past and its encounter with the current life of its nomadic creator. A pride for the Berber culture and the one who appropriates it.

  • Stain treatment:

For long-lasting maintenance, use a vacuum cleaner. If the stain has been caused by a liquid, you must act quickly to prevent drying - use paper towels to absorb and then shampoo to clean. When in doubt, professional dry cleaning will always remain your best choice.
